ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Cosmetology is a promising field for people who want to go into business for themselves.  It is also a creative field where the work takes place in pleasant surroundings and in close contact with people.  At Minuteman, cosmetology students earn 1,000 hours of instruction necessary to qualify to take the state licensing examination for employment as a cosmetologist in the state of Massachusetts.  Students majoring in cosmetology must have controlled finger dexterity and the ability to do precise work.  Good interpersonal skills are also very important.  Students will receive their OSHA 10-hour certification (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and a CPR, AED, and First Aid Certification.

The Cosmetology Program is a 1000-hour  program which begins in September. This program is scheduled to run four evenings a week, five and a half hours (5.5) per night, totaling twenty-two (22) hours per week. Classes are held from 4:30 PM - 10:00 PM (subject to adjustment).

Job growth projection for cosmetologists, including barbers and hairstylists, is predicted to increase by 12%, significantly higher than the national average. Demand for hair coloring, hair straightening, and other advanced hair treatments has risen in recent years, a trend that is expected to continue over the coming decade.
